My students will develop an understanding of both the past and present through reading, discussing and exploring two novels. The first novel focuses on the Sudanese Civil War and brings us into 2008 where one of the main characters (who is currently living in Rochester, NY) uses his experiences of being a refugee to make a difference of the people in his home country- specifically making wells so children can attend school. Our second novel follows the lives of three characters, one living in 1930s Nazi Germany, another is a Cuban girl in 1994 living during riots and the last is a Syrian boy in 2015 who is experience violence in his country. All five characters my students will read about will allow them to explore different aspects of history where there were times of violence and unrest. My students will have a deeper understanding of what it means to be a refugee. We will explore this topic to allow students to form their own understanding of what it means to be a refugee today. My hope is that readers will discover both empathy and a love of literature as they delve into challenging and sometimes quite heartbreaking topics. It is imperative that my students have a wide selection of characters from different backgrounds in order to build connections and understanding of how children their own age grow up. We must look at the past in order to understand the present and to build a stronger future.
