My students attend a Title I school which means the majority of my students come from a lower socioeconomic home. They don't have access to many learning materials at home, and many times they don't have people at home who can help them with their learning whether it be because of their work schedules or because they themselves are not literate or don't speak English.
My students need hands-on learning materials to help the fundamentals of reading stick. The more hands-on active opportunities they have to reinforce skills, the more likely they are to retain those fundamentals. My project is to provide magnetic letters, whisper phones, rhyming activities, pocket charts, white boards/pockets, tactile letters and sentence strips for my students. These materials will be used in independent and small group stations to reinforce alphabetical knowledge, phonemic awareness skills, reading fluency and phonics skills. I use daily five literacy station in my room, and these materials will be put directly into those station for hands-on learning experiences.
When teaching a classroom with many English language learners, they need to be exposed to pictures, tactile materials, and the opportunity to explore things on their own. They won't retain information if it is only given verbally, and I want to increase the opportunities they have to practice these skills daily in different ways.
