“The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, Young Reader’s Edition” by William Kamkwamba is the story of a young boy who was determined to make a difference in his community when a devastating drought struck his village and his family lost their means of food and income. This novel will be a perfect pairing with the novel I already have for my students to read “I Am Malala.” In both books, the main characters fight for something they believe in to overcome their circumstances and make the world a better place not only for themselves but for those around them. Despite their young age, they are successful. These novels are important to teach because many students feel that they are just kids and that there is nothing they can do to make a difference. These novels are inspiring and motivating. Such novels allow students to become immersed in a narrative story without the negative feelings typically associated with non-fiction texts. This novel will also expose students to a wider global perspective because they will be able to learn about experiences and cultures different from their own. My plan for the classroom is to have half of my students read “I Am Malala” and the other half read “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.” For students to gain the most from these novels, they will be able to have class discussions about the content of both novels, comparing and contrasting, and digging deeper into the text. Such discussions will enhance the students reading experiences because they will be communicating with their peers about the contents and ideas of both novels, they will be looking at connections to their own lives, and finding inspiration in the stories of William and Malala.
