I believe that the ability to read is a precursor to success in all areas of academic excellence. Reading is also a great way to expand understanding and compassion in a diverse world. It is my goal to instill a love of reading in my students. The titles and genres I have requested, will offer my students an engaging, literature/vocabulary rich, and a diverse selection of books. For instance, the books, I Dissent by Debbie Levy (Jane Addams) and On a Beam of Light (Albert Einstein) by Jennifer Berne, offer students a glimpse into the lives of unique people who were considered "different" and "weird" by the others, but whose ideas and actions made the world a better place. These are the kind of role models that our students need! These books will not only help them build their literacy skills, but will also inspire them and expand their knowledge of the world around them.
