Traditionally 6th grade students have the opportunity to visit our state capitol in St. Paul, Minnesota. We are taking the trip to reinforce learning that is taking place in our social studies classes, specifically Minnesota history and government units. We are requesting support to help pay for transportation. During the tour the students will learn more about the practices of the three branches of government as well as seeing them in action! Students will visit the Supreme Court, the House of Representatives and the Senate chambers. If we are lucky and time allows we also complete the tour with the governor’s reception room to round out the executive branch! The Minnesota State Capitol is recognized as having some of the greatest architecture of any capitol in the nation. Students will learn about the history of its design and the materials used to construct the capitol. Students will get a firsthand look at how Cass Gilbert weaves in all of Minnesota’s state symbols and native materials used in the construction of the building. We also allow time to tour the monuments and memorials on the state capitol campus which include Minnesota Vietnam memorial and other statues of historical Minnesota figures. Many of these students will not ever have the opportunity to visit our capitol in this way and it is usually is a trip they will remember for a lifetime! Even though our district fully supports this field trip, they are unable to fund the trip due to budget cuts and so we seek out generous donors to help make this trip possible for all of our students. Thank you for considering the support of this field trip for our students!
