Next school year, as I have stated earlier, my district will be implementing a relentless culture of reading. Our goal as a district is to have every student reading by the age of nine. As a first grade teacher, that means I have to work to lay the foundation of reading. Not only will I need to provide the skills necessary to read words in a book, but also make reading joyful and engaging. So many students come into first grade disliking reading.
It is my intention to build that love of reading through read alouds that students can read, reread, and read again. By displaying the books that I have already read aloud, students are able to jump into a text they have already read and loved. This builds their understanding that reading is enjoyable and fun!
With this new initiative of creating a relentless culture of reading, I will be conducting several read alouds a day. I would love to display the stories in way that promotes students rereading the stories they loved, or even sharing them with others. A library display like this one would be a wonderful addition to my classroom.
