I am a school psychologist in two urban elementary schools, serving children from pre-kindergarten through the fifth grade. These students come from low income households and have experienced more trauma in their few years of life than most of us will ever know including being witnesses to homicide, losing family members to house fires, having incarcerated parents and being exposed to violence and drug use. I work primarily with those children who have emotional disabilities, attention and behavioral problems, and often respond to small challenges with anger and aggression. These students struggle to manage their behaviors in the school setting and would benefit from therapeutic services that would teach them coping skills and strategies for regulating their emotions to ultimately improve their school performance.
