My students attend a Title 1 school whose community is underprivileged. My class is very curious and excited when they get to our reading block time. Our school follows the balanced literacy approach to teaching which means most of our day is focused on reading, writing and word study. We also use the CGI approach to teaching Math. This is based on the students solving problems without direct instruction and by drawing upon informal knowledge of everyday situations. I have a first grade classroom composed of 19 students. A great amount of time in first grade is dedicated to reading, especially because 1st graders are expected to jump so many reading levels throughout the year. It is a constant battle to keep students interested and motivated so they can stay focused on accomplishing this, so I am always finding new resources and tools for the kids I order to make this happen.
