These poetry books will aid students in understanding, interpreting, and writing their own poetry. Students in AP Lit will be able to evaluate a full collection of poems instead of a single poem. Students will be able to see the connections between and throughout the poems on their own. Students are expected to read and analyze poetry for the AP exam, but students do not have access to poetry texts. Students in Writer's Workshop will have access to poetry to inspire them while creating their own poetry portfolios. Students in this class need more modern samples - they are writing poetry in modern times. Poetry is a bad word for most students; this project can change that attitude and understanding. Using the works of living poets shows students that poetry is not only from the past. Poetry is alive and well. Giving all students easy access to modern poets will unlock their understanding of literature as a whole. I have seen my students struggle through a modern poem and they come out on the other side feeling successful and connected. I hope this project will help students to make those connections sooner and with positive struggle.
