I like to think that our classroom's carpet is equal to the "family table". Gathering my students on the carpet throughout the day has become the spot where we all come together no matter what has occurred. On the carpet, my students learn various skills. But most importantly, my students use the carpet as a safe place to have meaningful conversations with the use of read-aloud stories. The books selected for this project cover the topics of feelings, empathy, taking responsibility for one's actions, and using kind words. During a classroom conflict or situation, using a good story to tell what is and isn't appropriate for these 4 to 6-year-olds provides a powerful message.
