I teach in an urban environment where all of the students receive free lunch. I have 20 first graders. Of the 20, I have 5 students receiving special education services, 5 students who have repeated kindergarten or first grade, and 2 students who are receiving speech therapy. I have 2 students reading above grade level, 10 reading on grade level and 8 students reading below grade level. My school is one of the lowest performing schools in the state of Virginia. Despite our challenges, the school has made a significant amount growth in math and reading in the past year. I attribute that to a change in attitude with staff and students. The teachers and students have been working extremely hard and are proud of our school's most recent accomplishments. Although a quarter of my students have been retained, they do not feel defeated. They are just as passionate about learning as my other students. I want to be build an environment where students can experience academic success.
