Many students in my school struggle with reading. To combat this, my school is focusing on literacy in ALL classrooms. The use of free-voluntary reading in world-language classrooms is a practice that is gaining popularity, and for good reason. Stephen Krashen, a respected second language acquisition researcher and expert, published a study with the following claim: Free voluntary reading, reading because you want to, is one of the most effective tools we have in second language and foreign language education. It is also the easiest and most pleasant to use. Some of the best learning comes from stories - help me fill my classroom with great reading material! With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to be engaged by their individual interests at their level in their second (or third, or fourth)language.
