As an ESE Teacher serving students with varying exceptionalities, I have taken multiple courses this year focusing on the science of reading. During this time, I was called to reflect on the students I provide services for and for those in the RtI/MTSS tiers within the multiple grade levels at our school. The science of reading is imperative for successful reading acquisition! What I found was most of our struggling readers were referred with reading comprehension issues when in all actuality most of them were truly struggling with the inability to decode. Decoding/word recognition is the ability to accurately and quickly read the text and it plays a critical role in reading comprehension. When a child struggles with decoding, fluency is decreased, accuracy is compromised, errors occur, and the energy needed for comprehension is depleted by the effort required to simply decode. To make real change in reading achievement for ALL students, my first project is to create a Literacy Intervention Library, that will be accessible not only to special education teachers but for all teachers Kindergarten through 8th grade to reference. There needs to be access to evidence-based curriculum specifically in how to fully integrate a phonics-based approach that calls for structured and explicit instruction in every classroom. Developing teacher knowledge around scientifically based reading assessments and instructional practices should be a priority because when we know better, we do better; and the children that we are educating today are counting on us to provide them with the most successful interventions so that they will have the opportunity to soar! I would greatly appreciate you partnering with me in this project to make a difference in the academic careers of not only my students but all current and future students at our school!!
