I call my class of 5th graders a mini United Nations. They come from all different corners of the world (some from refugee camps) and have amazing (and sometime horrifying) stories of things they have experienced. 96% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Few of them have anyone in their family who has attended college. Most of them live with one parent. 75% of them speak another language at home. If you just looked at the statistics you might say my class is under privileged. But you won't find a more motivated harder working group of kids anywhere. They come to school every day ready to learn and excited for their future. It's my job to encourage their creativity, passion and give them the encouragement to realize their potential.
