My students are all lower level English students, which means they struggle with reading comprehension, reading fluency, and writing. One of the best ways to improve these skills is by practicing reading. Too often in schools, the subject matter they're introduced to is uninteresting or unapplicable to their lives, and they quickly lose interest in reading at all. Books such as Harry Potter and Eragon are easy enough to read and well within the students' subject matter interest. Having books that are interesting for them and available for them to read, as well as being used in class projects including book reports, will improve their overall comprehension and reading fluency, which has a profound effect on their academic performance in other subject areas as well.
My goal in expanding this classroom library is to encourage students to read more. By presenting them with subject matter that is interesting to them or has something to do with their lives, they'll develop those skills that they need to be successful in the classroom by doing something that becomes enjoyable for them.
