Students have been asking for a photography class, and I am eager to teach them... but we don't have a camera. Having a DSLR in the classroom would provide so many new possibilities for these kids. The students would be able to use it to document each project throughout the year to create a digital portfolio they can take with them as they grow and progress in their creativity. Incorporating technology alongside more traditional art methods will help build a strong foundation moving forward. Access to a DSLR would allow the students to learn how to manually manipulate camera settings to achieve the desired outcome, which is an art form in itself. We would also use the camera to take photos for use in other projects, to capture students working on projects, and to document the ways we use our art to impact our school and community. Having such a piece of equipment would teach a new skills, new responsibilities, and it would provide us the means to teach a whole new art medium to eager learners.
