Our school is a high school for newly arrived immigrants. This means these students must acquire English academic language fluency quickly. Fortunately, our students are highly motivated and hard working. However, they are also financial challenged. Eighty-four percent of our students qualify for free lunch and another 7% qualify for reduced-price lunch. One of our goals is to motivate students to attend college after graduation. Books like the Bluford series are books that the students are self-motivated to read and this helps prepare them to be self-learners and life-long readers. Furthermore, while there has been a lot of talk about the digital divide, it is truly evident in our population. As the financial crisis of the US continues, access to technology decreases. I am happy to provide the students with the opportunity to incorporate digital fluency in our class work.
