I teach a high ESOL student population in 5th grade. I teach Reading and Social Students to two classes. I integrate Social Studies into my literacy instruction to meet the linguistic needs of my students. Many of our Social Studies concepts are very difficult for them, and I need some help in providing authentic children's literature to bring our history to life! I've found that children's literature has gone by the wayside as the students get older. However, they need these books to enhance their understanding of the 5th grade Reading/Social Studies curriculum. I am a big proponent of technology, but we need books as well. The books that I have chosen will spark rich discussion within my classroom. Modeling, sharing age appropriate literature, and having these books to share as part of my mini lessons (as well as a part of our classroom library) will promote a literacy rich learning environment.
