My students are middle school kids who live in an inner-city neighborhood. They are wonderful, smart and funny! They are students who deserve the best education I am able to provide. Many of my students come to school in a disorganized frame of mind, make excuses for not doing the work, don't do their homework, are physically aggressive, see only part of what is on the page, can't get started and work only for teachers they like. These are characteristics of the poverty they live in. Schools rely on middle class norms and these need to be intentionally taught to my students who live in poverty. By building positive relationships with them, I hope to bring them out of these attitudes and help them become more successful students.
