I teach chorus and general music at a middle school in a rural part of the FL panhandle. My students are bright and eager to learn, but often handicapped by high poverty and lack of opportunities. My mission is to get my students as many tools as possible to give them the same opportunities as students from wealthier areas and families. It is very likely that the only musical education my students will get in in my elementary music class. Many of them will never be able to take private lessons or attend any live musical performances outside of school. I strive to not only give them many opportunities to be musical, but I try to give them as many opportunities to create as I can. If I can give just one student the tools and confidence necessary to allow him/her to feel comfortable letting his/her creativity and imagination shine, then I've done my job.
