My students live in a small mountain town in northern New Mexico. These materials will help them master the skills needed to navigate many outdoor spaces available in our area, as well as the ability to safely enjoy the natural beauty and experiences New Mexico has to offer. Being able to orient with a map and compass will allow my students to access numerous hiking trails, cross country skiing, snow shoeing and more, in our area with confidence. This will allow them to expand the scope of their health and wellness in new experiences safely. Orienteering is a sport in which participants compete and navigate round a series of checkpoints (control points) using a large scale map and relying heavily on teamwork. Although the fastest team back wins, navigational skills are more important than running speed – the activity can be performed both for fun and competitively and is suitable for all ages.
