The need for sensory integration is imperative for many students in our classroom. The use of water, sand, and shaving cream are currently used for students to explore, play, and learn. Adding washable sensory play materials to our repertoire will promote a safe way to work on cognitive, language, social, problem solving, and motor skills. These skills are necessary to be active members of their school community and can be especially helpful for students with anxiety and nervousness. Sensory integration is also a way to promote learning through the senses which help neural pathways in the brain. The students in my classroom will benefit from the sensory integration set by giving them the opportunity to learn through play in a non-traditional classroom setting. When students engage their senses it helps them make sense of the world around them. The way the brain processes these experiences can be a major source of distress and discomfort for students with disabilities. The sensory integration set will help them learn to cope with seemingly normal experiences.
