Students come to my classroom for "wellness breaks." They check in with their body and emotions when they come in and again when they leave. Our goal is to help them feel calm and ready to learn. Most of the students that regularly come to my classroom experience learning disabilities, or additional needs, come from disadvantaged homes, are minorities, or are working through emotionally trying experiences. They often ask about each other's struggles and want to learn more. They find ways to encourage each other on hard days and celebrate one another when they feel confident and calm. These students know what it's like to be somewhat disenfranchised. They seem to be forming a community of friendship and inclusion while striving to implement life skills. I simply want to help facilitate their growth and witness how they create their own culture of belonging.
