I teach in a resource classroom for middle school students with varying needs and abilities. My students are all identified with learning disabilities, and for some that stems from environmental influences. Many of my students live in homes that do not contain any books; they were never read to as children and most have lost the joy of learning. Our school, as a whole, struggles with reading. Yet, the standards require the core classes to focus on informational text; which though important, will not teach a child to enjoy reading. However, in my room, I have the ability to shift my focus from standards and focus on each students' individual needs. I can choose to expose my students to literature, to the classics, to poetry, and to worlds unseen. I can create curiosity. I can remind them that learning is fun.
