The heart of a leveled reader is found in guided reading groups. The teacher works with small groups of students on their specific reading levels. Teachers use the leveled readers to scaffold instruction. This ensures that high level students continue learning. Students studying below level are growing but not frustrated with literature that's too challenging. On-level students are challenged to continue growing on grade level expectations. Leveled readers also enhance the benefits of independent reading. If students read a book that is too challenging, they often either discard the book or their reading comprehension breaks down. If students read literature below their reading level, students aren't able to grow to higher reading levels. However, when students read literature right on their independent or instructional level their time reading propels their comprehension to the next level.
