I work in a very diverse part of Texas. We have families from all over the country and a large Hispanic community. Our students are mobile and often change to 2 or 3 schools in one year. Our beginning of the year scores show that we have 80% - 85% of our students BELOW the reading benchmarks. I'm constantly working to keep school fun while preparing students for the STAAR test. Failing 5th grade STAAR, means retention - and retention can set a student back for the rest of his or her life.
