Inspiration View combines the arts with academics to reach the learning styles of ALL children. While Battle of the Books is implemented nation-wide, the approach that we are taking here at our elementary school is a little step 'Beyond', hence the name Battle of the Books and Beyond. Using higher-level reading content in conjunction with a reading club and city-wide competition, this immersion in Battle Books (chosen based on their quality and profound content) is one component currently being utilized to meet this expectation. The Beyond indicates an expectation that these novels are not only read by 5th graders and used for a reading battle, but are used for classroom instruction to enhance existing curriculum in support of state standards, are used at all intermediate grade levels, are used to enhance rigor for above-grade-level and GT intervention groups, and are used in support of the writing component currently in use here, tying quality literature to writing. Student achievement in the DIBEL and PARCC assessments is expected to grow based on this program, but just as important is how these novels will tap into the emotional, imaginative, and creative abilities all children have inspiring a love of reading and exposing students to multi-cultural and complex narratives. Battle-of-the-Books club, competition, and utilization of these novels in instruction supports the District’s culture of risk-taking, innovation, and a life-long love of learning. The experience with deep, profound, literature content through Battle Books goes beyond improved assessment scores. Through competition and increased knowledge, it enhances confidence. It emphasizes an appreciation of academic enthusiasm and strength over athletic prowess.
