Preschool students are experiencing tremendous growth and learning during their first school years. Assessing their development, however, is not as easy as giving them quizzes and worksheets. Preschool children need to have their learning assessed in authentic, developmentally appropriate ways. A camera is one of the most important assessment tools available to measure learning in a preschool classroom. When children create a block structure, photographic evidence can provide proof of learning in many areas -- math, science, and social emotional goals can all be documented by a well thought out photograph. In the science area, a photo of an experiment in progress can illustrate what science goals have been met. Not only will the children benefit from the authentic assessment a camera enables, but learning materials will be enriched through use of a camera. For example, cooking activities guided by step-by-step photos of the process help the children learn to follow directions even before they are able to read.
