I always start each and every lesson by telling students to make a good choice on where they want to sit and to make sure it is somewhere that they are comfy and can focus so that their brains can grow big and strong. Even us as adults don't like to sit in the same spot all day long. I find myself going between sitting in a chair, standing, sitting on the ground, constantly moving to help myself stay focused, and I am 32 years old. I cannot imagine asking a six year old to sit still in one or two spots all day!
The problem is, the only two choices I have in my classroom are chairs and the rug- Adding a variety of flexible seating options for my kiddos will give them comfortable choices, easily allow for group work/cooperative learning, and allow them to truly focus on their learning all while keeping their wiggly little bodies busy!
Flexible seating is also a great way to incorporate partner and group work because the students are able to sit in different places with different classmates throughout the day. When they are confined to desks, they are sitting by the same few peers day after day until a new seating arrangement is made. I am so excited to watch the amazing impact that flexible seating will have on my 1st graders!
