My students mostly come from low-income families. Many of them are second language learners. Their life experiences seldom bring them much beyond the confines of the housing project in which they live. And their dreams reflect that. Often times they can't see what the world holds for them. They can't see themselves as having a significant part in the broader world. Their view of themselves and their futures are confined by the limited experiences they are able to have. I want my students to see how beautiful the world is both within their own community and outside of that community. I want them to see themselves as being capable and bright and valuable to our society as a whole. I want this because I know how wonderful they truly are. I want them to see this so they can grow up to be the successful members of society that we so sorely need. Please help them.
