The materials that I have requested were intentionally selected to assist in creating a safe and welcoming literature-focused classroom. Too many of my students come to me having endured trauma in their personal lives at a young age. This has left them closed off and sometimes apprehensive towards new things.
I am requesting flexible seating such as pillows, wobble seats, stools, and area rug, so that my students have the ability to choose the learning space that works best for them. The other requests for glue, cardstock, journals, and chart paper are all for students to share their connections and responses to the things that they read. By providing them a comfortable and safe environment to forget about life's troubles and escape to another world through literacy, we are able to watch them blossom!
I want to foster a love of reading in my students; and you would be surprised what magic can occur with a special pillow and a book in a little corner of their own! I encourage my students to remain resilient no matter the circumstances. An inviting classroom and readily available supplies will allow them the opportunity to do that. The tap lights that I requested will serve as a non-verbal form of communication for groups so that they can get my attention without disturbing the learning environment of others. My only hope is to provide them with what they deserve in order to allow them to shine as the scholars that they are.
