My students are given a great deal of time to read for pleasure. As English Language Learners, books expose them to cultural experiences, new vocabulary, and proper grammar and syntax. However, for many of my students, reading is intimidating. Often students arrive at school having never experienced written language. By creating a "cozy corner" for reading in our room, students can customize their reading time to make it conducive to their needs. If I can make reading a joyful and relaxing activity, my students are more likely to become lifelong readers. Every ounce of research out there shows that kids who enjoy reading read more. Kids who read more have more success in school. Kids who have more success in school are more likely to have more success in life. The parents of my students sacrificed everything to give their children the best possible opportunities in life. It is my job to help these kids on their way. Allowing my students to choose between the Giant Pillows or the Flex-Space Comfy Floor Seats gives them an extra dash of autonomy as they customize their reading experiences.
