Thank you for taking the time to check out our page! I am a Special Education Teacher at a great school, Byrne Elementary, in Chicago, IL. I currently teach low incidence students ranging from the Kindergarten grade level all the way through 4th grade. The primary diagnosis in Room 113 is Autism, but that does not mean that is the only diagnosis. Most of the students have severe sensory processing deficits, are cognitively lower than other peers their age, lack appropriate social skills, and/or have significant speech impairments; all of which require a significantly modified curriculum as well as a structured and modified classroom environment. So what do we do in a room like this? EVERYTHING! We work on basic, yet functional: academic skills, social skills, self-regulating techniques, communication skills, cooking, listening, routine/schedules, hygiene, and/or coping skills to be successful!
