My fifth grade students spend a lot of time seated, both at school (during seated class work) and at home (while using technology). Offering a stand up desk to my students is an easy way to help them get on their feet and activate their brains, giving them a break from their seat at their desk. There has been an abundance of research proving that movement is key to cognitive function and greatly increases the ability to learn. Movement increases cognitive function, brain health, and physical health! In Maine, winter and spring can be especially tough on students during days when they are not able to get outside because of freezing temperatures or muddy playspaces. The stand-up desk allows students to stand up and to move, because of the inclusion of a swinging footrest, which allows continual movement without disturbing the focus of other students. My hope is that providing an alternative work space in the classroom will help my students learn to recognize when they need a movement break and an appropriate way to get one within our classroom!
