My students are eager to learn. The world always makes more sense in context. If students do not have a reference point it is harder for them to relate. In this case, we have children who do not spend a great deal of time with nature and have not been given the chance to experience what it's like to grow plants that they can touch, or even eat. These children live in high poverty households with little to no resources for anything that is not a necessity. They come to school to be nourished both tummies and minds. A project like this will not only excite them but also provide hands on learning, along with lessons across the curriculum. I will be able to bring in health, and the importance of vegetables, while also introducing the plethora of jobs available in fields dealing with aquaponics and the benefits to maintaining our environment while also preserving our natural resources.
