"Speech Buddies" are tools for students working on improving their speech. Some speech sounds are extremely difficult and frustrating for students to learn because they are produced completely inside the mouth. Therefore, my students must rely on following complex verbal directions to figure out the correct position of their lips, jaw, and tongue to produce the sounds. Some students are not capable of following these directions and can become extremely frustrated after 20-30 minutes everyday failing to get it right! The Speech Buddies are a new tool that goes into the mouth for the child to actually be able to FEEL exactly what their tongue should be doing to produce these frustrating sounds! Some of these students have been in therapy for years trying to learn a sound. I have been fortunate enough to trial the /r/ speech buddy with one of my fifth grade students who really struggles and always say w for r. After using the speech buddy for 10 minutes, my student said "Wow that was weird but worth it because I got some Results!" I was shocked that he actually used a word with /r/ correctly and happy that he felt successful. My students are aged 7-10 and they are becoming aware of their speech errors and it starts to affect their self-esteem! The speech buddies could be invaluable to help my students improve their speech and their lives!
