My students already have an independent reading library at their disposal. However, if I want my students to be truly proficient in the second grade Common Core State Standards, I cannot solely rely on books at their independent reading level. I must also include some Close Reading of complex text. The books I have selected, including The Story of Johnny Appleseed and The Legend of the Bluebonnet, are perfect for not just teaching content that my students should gain, but they are also sufficiently complex for us to productively struggle through them. I know that my students will rise to the occasion. Please help us get some complex text into our classroom! Thanks!
