Research has shown that learning to read music notation can improve a student's classroom reading ability. I teach elementary music, grades k-5. As a Title 1 school, more than 45% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. For many of my students, their weekly 45 minute music class is their only chance to play a quality instrument. Research also shows that students who are engaged in music have better attendance, and are more likely to graduate from high school. For some students, music is the most powerful motivator for them to come to school. Your partnership in these DonorsChoose projects will have an impact not only on my current students, but on future students as well, as we work to ensure that every child has access to quality musical instruments in our school music program.
