I currently teach 5th-12th grade general/vocal music in a district where I travel between buildings. Middle school students are required to take general music until 8th grade, regardless of their decision to participate in elective band. General music classes range from 25-33 students, so 35 ukuleles for the classroom would be enough for each student to have an instrument to play. I want to make musical instruments and education in those instruments available to all students, regardless of their ability to purchase an instrument. Sometimes students in this age group have decided that they aren't musicians and give up on making music if they are not in band. Ukuleles would be a fun, motivating to get all students involved in the music making process. My goal is for all of these students to realize how much music has enhanced their lives, and I hope that learning to play an instrument will help those students continue to love music in the future.
