My students attend a small k-8 public school with a Montessori focus. The students are of diverse backgrounds, many come from homes struggling to make ends meet so they can not go out and buy these books to read for themselves. The majority of the students have attended the school since kindergarten. The students and I have been borrowing books and meeting in groups of 10-15 to read stories that match the topics we are studying. When reading difficulty is hard students read with a stronger buddy. Sometimes we have found books on tape from the local library and listened as a group. "I'm sorry I read too far," or "I can't wait to finish," is heard often in my classroom. Students care a lot about the characters they meet in books and want to understand their challenges.
