Communication difficulties are a major part of Autism, and it is my job to teach these students how to communicate effectively. Most of my students have moderate to severe language and speech disorders. Tantrums are common and sometimes stem from frustration with inability to make themselves understood. Some students are using jargon (unintelligible words) to try to communicate. Others are echolalic (repeating what has just been said to them, or quotes from TV or movies). When I teach them to use meaningful words and they see that language is useful, the jargon and echolalia gradually drop out. Some at age 5 or 6 are just putting 2-3 words together to make a short sentence. Some speak in sentences, but have difficulties with grammar and syntax (word order), affecting verbal and written communication. Almost all are delayed in vocabulary development, especially with abstract concepts. My K-5 school is in a high poverty area. Title I funds do not cover the specialized materials needed.
