My students have not had the opportunity to go on field trips or have special speakers come into our classroom because of COVID-19. I want to give them some hands on experiences in the classroom that will fill those gaps. This Life Cycle Unit is a long term project that will begin in March and continue to the end of the school year. My students will be learning about the life cycles of plants, butterflies, and chickens, and how they interact with each other in an ecosystem. I already have an incubator and a few other supplies for hatching chicks, but in order to make a well rounded experience I need a few more things. The brood box will allow my students to carefully interact with and provide a safe space for the chicks while no one is at school, while egg models and the egg candler provide the students the chance to see the growth of the chicks inside the eggs. The butterfly farm will provide the materials needed to teach the butterfly life cycle, and the models will give them a chance to get hands on with the changes the butterflies go through. Finally, the plant box and plants will give the kids a chance to watch plants grow from an angle they've never seen before- underground!
The opportunities presented by this unit and these materials are endless. My students will receive hands on experiences and education that would otherwise be sorely limited. They will get to explore their world, and connect their learning across all domains- what starts as science will become math, language arts, and social studies through the extension of each project. Even as COVID-19 keeps us isolated, these rich and engaging experiences will always have a place in my classroom!
