Technology continually finds its way into the fabric of day-to-day interactions. With this trend comes an increasing divide between those who know how technology is continually developed to make tasks easier and those who only benefit from technology with limited awareness that it is even there. Likewise, there is a divide between those who invest a substantial amount of time to learn how to play an instrument well and then play with a large group of peers at a high level of precision and those who may be willing to invest a far smaller amount of time to come listen at a performance. This project seeks to bridge these divides by bringing students together from two growing successful programs in Orchestra and Engineering and creating a product that they can share with a greater audience to hear, see, and enjoy. Students directly involved in the Brandywine Bow Project will have the opportunity to assemble circuit components including buttons, sensors, LEDs, and a microcontroller, provide the code that will program the microcontroller to control the LEDs, 3D print clips that will allow them to fix the assembly to a bow with a quick release option, and ultimately through practice and performance, make continual improvements through the engineering design cycle for unforeseen applications and performances.
