In a diverse, urban community in Minnesota there are 15 kindergarten English language learners who are wide eyed and ready to learn. In their public school, as they are greeted each day by their teachers with a smile they walk past a sign from the teachers that states "you are important, you are cared for, you are listened to." They love to move their bodies to music, clap to the rhythm of a song they sing, and repeat the lines of their favorite children's books. Most are born in the U.S. but a few come from refugee camps of war torn countries or they are here because their parents are studying or even teaching at American Universities. They come from Iraq, Mexico, Somalia, Ecuador, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Tibet. 80% are living below the poverty line. Family is very important to my students. My students know by the age of 5 that if they learn English and achieve academic success they will have many more opportunities in life which fulfill the reasons their parents came to this country.
