My students in Introduction to Journalism are learning about the importance of journalism and media in our 21st century world. We will read The Help to both increase their literacy and exposure to good writing and to lead us into a discussion on ethical and responsible journalism. With information at our fingertips through websites, television, and social media, student journalists need to be able to distinguish for themselves the difference between reputable journalism and the sensational media that we are often bombarded with. Reading The Help will allow students to see the important role that reputable journalists play in telling stories that document what's important at this moment in time.
