I have plenty of wonderful, interesting novels in my classroom. I have everything from fables to biographies, but my students come to me day after day complaining about how bored with reading they are. I used to think that was because the books weren't relevant to them so I went through them to see if I find which ones I could get rid of. I discovered that students were bored because they weren't reading with their imaginations. I couldn't find a single book that I wanted to get rid of. I even repaired the books that were damaged because I couldn't find a single book that wasn't worth reading. My bookshelf is full of great stories, but my students need some help using their imaginations and getting fully involved in the story. I have chosen some items to build a reading nook that reminds me of a grove in the woods in which anyone can get lost, forget about whatever is on their mind, and get lost in a wonderful story. The rug, tree stump pillows, and overhead canopy will foster an imaginative environment by eliminating outside distractions and bringing that familiar comfort of wonderful characters that books bring us. The padded seat/shelf will be the core of the nook providing comfort and a close place for many novels to reside. Finally, the tubs will provide a way for me to organize the books I already have in a way that students can choose their next adventure swiftly and get back to reading. I know that this will be an inviting place where my students are lured into falling in love with reading instead of being consumed with social media. From texting to texts.
