My students are powerful, influential, creative and motivated individuals. Coming from a low-income community, they often go without the necessary materials and resources needed to succeed academically . One of the greatest challenges our students face is the incredible pressure associated with the testing standards of No Child Left Behind. Although the importance of these standards are good willed in nature, it brings tremendous pressure placed on low-performing schools and unfortunately it is creating incredible resistance to reading in the students who need to be reading the most. In order to pass a standardized test, students are given skill and drill classes day in and day out, and because of this there is less emphasis on reading. As a result of this, I suspect many students who will be entering our classroom may have never read a novel in their English class.
