My high school director use to say he had the best kids in the county in band. I now know what he means. I work with great students each day who are always inspiring me to be a better teacher. Many of my students come from low-income households. Poverty has taken an effect on the school. I have around fifty kids in band. Of those fifty, less than ten are able to rent an instrument. All the other students must use school instruments, many of which are not in good condition. Many students are unable to play the instrument they sound best on because they are unable to rent and we have a limited supply of school instruments. Yet, these students come in with a great attitude each day determined to better themselves as musicians. The schools have shown a commitment desire to help build the band program. However, because the high poverty percentage in the county and lack of funds, it can be a struggle.
