Sensory integration theory supports implementing multi-sensory experiences to increase the sustained focus of students with special needs. Additionally, research suggests that multi-sensory environments enhance therapeutic and educational outcomes by reducing agitation and anxiety. My students need a safe space to self-regulate, and a multi-sensory space to learn self-regulation strategies. We currently have access to some materials through our Occupational Therapist, but our current space is not suitable to meet our current needs. The room divider, the light shades, the mats and other sensory tools will help us create a space more conducive to the multi-sensory experiences that will help our students achieve and perform their best each day.
