I selected the phonics games centers based on my students needs(only 8 of 19 are currently on expected grade level skills). My students need more practice to decode phonemes and other phonic skills through hands-on activities to practice these skills in reading games. They also would benefit with developing their fluency and accuracy with recognizing of sight words through games that would provide them to also collaborate with others. Then, I selected the high interested, non-fiction articles and magazines to provide real text so my students can practice their phonics and sight words skills within text to practice their accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. I chose these resources so that my students will have hands-on, collaborative opportunities to practice their early reading skills of phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding of sight words, as well as small groups. I also feel strongly that is takes a village to provide many opportunities for my student to learn how important learning is in their future. Therefore, I strive to get parent and community volunteers in my classroom at least once a week to be a "First Grade Buddy", which will also utilize these resources as they work one-on-one with my students to develop a positive relationship and improve academic success.
